Figure incontournable du paysage normand, Robert le Diable a suscité bon nombre d’études. Les origines diaboliques du personnage jouent un rôle majeur dans la construction de la légende et offrent une vision du diable et du possédé en ce début du xiiie siècle.Toutefois, relire cette légende normande au regard de l’histoire des représentations et des normes notamment théologiques permet d’éclairer la nature plus complexe de Robert le diable, ainsi qu’une meilleure compréhension de ce personnage entre incarnation et possession diabolique.

An inescapable feature of the Norman landscape, Robert le Diable has given rise to many studies. The diabolic origins of the character play a major part in the construction of the legend, and offer a vision of the Devil and the man possessed in the beginning of the 13th century.However, reading this legend again in the light of the history of representations and norms - including theological ones - enables to point out the more complex nature of Robert le Diable, and provides a better comprehension of this character, situated between diabolic incarnation and possession.
