Such a perspective would certainly have enriched and honoured this discipline, but the question must be answered in the negative, for two reasons essentially. Firstly because the horizon of his approach remains within the boundaries of western tradition, and secondly because his concern with « ethnographic » description did not lead him to generalisations or to scientific laws which he seemed wary of.
