Y a-t-il une anthropologie du totalitarisme ? Louis Dumont a peu écrit sur le sujet, mais y portait un intérêt constant dans ses travaux. L’article montre que la théorie du totalitarisme est un problème crucial pour une œuvre consacrée à une perspective comparative sur les sociétés modernes : le totalitarisme est selon Dumont « une maladie de la société moderne », et le totalitarisme et la modernité relèvent du même cadre d’analyse, « l’hybridation » de l’individualisme et du holisme. La première partie présente l’anthropologie de la modernité selon Dumont et sa portée philosophique, telle qu’elle apparaît dans une discussion avec Vincent Descombes. La deuxième partie présente et évalue les hypothèses d’une anthropologie du totalitarisme en les comparant à la théorie politique classique de Hannah Arendt.

The anthropology of totalitarism: Reading of Vincent Descombes and Louis Dumont Is there an anthropology of totalitarianism? Louis Dumont did not write extensively on this topic. Yet, he had an ongoing interest in it. The paper shows how crucial the explanation of totalitarianism is in Dumont’s work, devoted to a comparative perspective on modern societies. Totalitarianism is ‘a disease of modern society’; totalitarian phenomena and modernisation can both be analysed through the same framework: the ‘hybridization’of individualism and holism. The first sections give an outline of Dumont’s ‘anthropology of modernity’ and of its philosophical bearings as they appear in the discussion between Dumont and the philosopher Vincent Descombes. The second part states the argument of the anthropological theory of totalitarianism and assesses its merits by comparing it with the classical political theory of Hanna Arendt and her followers.
