En vue de sa restauration, la Victoire de Samothrace a été descendue de sa base, qui a été démontée bloc à bloc pour pouvoir être reculée vers le fond du palier. Pour la première fois, ces blocs ont pu être étudiés et dessinés dans leur totalité. Il a également été possible de confirmer l’appartenance à la base d’un bloc conservé à Samothrace, dont un moulage a pu être rapproché des blocs jointifs de l’arrière de l’assise supérieure. La cuvette d’encastrement apparaît désormais presqu’entière, mais elle est nettement plus longue que la plinthe de la statue elle-même.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace in conservation : a study of the plinth-cuttingIn view of its conservation, the Winged Victory has been taken down from its base, which has been dismantled block by block, so it could be moved back towards the far end of the stairs landing. For the first time, all these blocks have been completely studied and drawn. It has also been possible to ascertain that a block kept in Samothrace, whose cast was successfully brought together with the jointed blocks of the rear upper course, does truly belong to the base. The plinth-cutting is now nearly complete, but its length is more important than the one of the statue’s plinth itself.
