L’exceptionnel fonds d’images que constituent, au milieu du xvie s., les Antichità romane de Pirro Ligorio recèle le dessin d’un petit autel, localisé à Gaeta, qui porte une dédicace à Asklèpios et Hygie, et un relief le montrant sous la forme d’un serpent devant sa fille. À quel monument antique se rattache en réalité ce dessin si insolite ? Quel parcours a-t-il suivi avant et après avoir été ainsi relevé par l’antiquaire napolitain ? Cette enquête, amorcée à la Renaissance, nous a permis de retrouver la trace d’un document étonnant, totalement détourné par Ligorio, dont nous avons cherché à percer le sens et à mesurer l’impact durant l’Antiquité. Ce monument n’est nullement lié à Asklèpios et à la forme sous laquelle il arriva à Rome. La clé d’élucidation de son iconographie réside dans la protection que les divinités isiaques accordaient au transport du blé depuis Alexandrie jusqu’à Rome.

The exceptional collection of images assembled by Pirro Ligorio in the Antichità romane around the middle of the 16th cent. contains the drawing of an altar located in Gaeta with a dedication to Asclepius and Hygeia and a relief depicting the god, in the guise of a snake, in front of his daughter. To which ancient artefact is this singular drawing actually related? What course did it follow before and after being documented by the Neapolitan-born antiquarian? This investigation, beginning with the Renaissance, enables us to trace back an astonishing document, which was significantly misrepresented by Ligorio, and to scrutinize its meaning and impact in Antiquity. It is by no means connected to Asclepius and the serpentine form in which he arrived in Rome. The key to understanding it lies in the protective role of Isiac deities with regard over the grain supply from Alexandria to Rome.
