En examinant la métaphore de la « Navigatio vitae », on aborde le rapport, dans l’œuvre de Blumenberg, entre le fond non thématisé et opaque de « l’a-conceptuel », et ce qui est explicite et focalisé, les concepts. Les métaphores – en particulier les métaphores « absolues » – assument, dans ce contexte, le rôle d’orientations de la pensée qui ne peuvent se cristalliser en concepts purs, mais qui guident l’attention dans des confrontations avec la réalité et guident donc non seulement l’imagination, mais la théorie elle-même. Le mythe aussi se situe sur le plan de l’a-conceptuel, mais il a la tâche de faire retrouver aux hommes la familiarité avec le monde. Et il est «toujours au travail », constituant déjà une forme de rationalisation des événements. Une comparaison entre les positions blumenbergiennes de Arbeit am Mythos et celles du Schelling de la Philosophie der Mythologie clôt l’article.

Through the example of the «navigatio vitae » – metaphor, the paper focuses on the relationships, in Blumenberg’s work, between the unthematized and dark « background », and the explicit and focalized dimension, the conceptual field. In this context, metaphors – specially the « absolute » ones – assume the function of orientating the thought – conveying trends which cannot cristallize in pure concepts, but which guide the attention in the confrontations with reality, acting not only in imagination, but in theory itself. The myth, too, dwells upon the level of the a-conceptual, but it has the task of re-creating a human familiarity with the world. And it is « always at work », being a first kind of rationalization of events. The paper ends with a comparaison between Blumenberg’s positions in Arbeit am Mythos and Schelling’s Philosophie der Mythologie.
