Considéré dans une perspective historique, le livre accompagne les évolutions culturelles et technologiques des communautés humaines. L’une des dimensions les plus significatives du livre, en tant qu’objet artistique, est à coup sûr esthétique. Au fil du temps, on observe de nombreuses interactions entre les livres et nous : nous façonnons des livres en accord avec nos besoins et nos connaissances, lesquels, à leur tour, nous façonnent. Cet article présente divers facteurs socio-historiques qui, chez les Serbes, ont influencé le développement de la reliure et, plus tard, l’imprimerie. Ensuite, à travers l’étude de cas de l’artiste-relieur serbe Aleksandar Ćeklić, nous examinons la relation concrète de la société et des individus avec le livre en tant qu’objet d’artisanat d’art à l’époque contemporaine.

Viewed from a historic perspective, a book followed cultural and technological processes in many human communities. One of the most important dimensions of a book is certainly the esthetic one, as a work of art. Many recurrent mutual influences can be viewed during the course of time, where on the one hand we create and shape books in accordance with our own needs and knowledge, and on the other they educate us. This research focuses on the role that various sociohistorical factors have played in shaping the book as an artistic object of culture and, through the analysis of Aleksandar Ćeklić, an artist-bookbinder, pays a particular attention to the specific attitude of the society and of the individual towards a book as an artistic object in modern times.
