L’empire des liens sociaux : tel est le sujet du Cousin Pons, dont la poétique nous semble fondamentalement déterminée par cette volonté de saisir la société comme un rhizome en perpétuelle expansion et traversé de conflits. On examine donc, dans cet article, la manière dont le roman présente un social tout à la fois constitué et empoisonné par la prolifération des liens mais figure, à côté d’une marche inexorable vers la fin (de l’homme et du récit), ce qui échappe ou résiste au fonctionnement social.

The power of social connection : this is the subject of Le Cousin Pons whose poetics is, for us, determined essentially by a vision of society as a rhizome, endlessly expanding and torn by conflicts. Our article thus considers how this novel presents social forms created and, at the same time contaminated, by the proliferation of connections. Nevertheless, Le Cousin Pons represents not only a progression towards the end (of man and of the narrative) but also what escapes or resists the functioning of society.
