Nous avons pu, grâce à une excellente traduction, récemment avoir accès au dernier roman de Florina Ilis : Le Livre des nombres. Sa lecture permet de constater qu’une fois de plus le modèle balzacien informe les œuvres les plus contemporaines. Florina Ilis y retrace la vie quotidienne des membres d’une famille transylvaine et de leur entourage sur quatre générations. Par ce biais, comme son prédécesseur, elle brosse l’histoire roumaine et européenne du xx e siècle en évoquant les mœurs et les préoccupations de gens ordinaires. Son récit multiforme est foisonnant de personnages, de situations et de détails très concrets. Elle a néanmoins su lui donner une marque très personnelle en lui insufflant une poésie indéniable.

Thanks to an excellent translation, we have lately been able to have access to the last novel by Florina Ilis: The Book of Numbers. A reading of this work makes us realize yet again that the Balzacian model influences the most contemporary of works. In it Florina Ilis depicts the everyday life of the members of a Transylvanian family and also that of their circle of acquaintances, over four generations. So, like her predecessor, she depicts the Romanian and European history of the 20th century by describing the manners and preoccupations of ordinary people. Her multiform narration abounds in characters, situations and clear, concrete details. She has however succeeded in giving her narration a very personal touch, infusing it with undeniable poetry.
