Créée en 1902, l’École de médecine à Hanoï accueille dès 1905 des étudiants chinois. Ce recrutement régional doit participer au rayonnement français en Asie en formant des aides-médecins destinés à une carrière dans leur pays d’origine. Enjeux éducatifs et diplomatiques se mêlent, mobilisant autorités coloniales, impériales et représentants français en Chine. Toutefois, le recrutement de ces « carabins » asiatiques demeure limité jusqu’aux années 1930, souffrant à la fois de concurrences étrangères et des limites d’une formation scientifique « à la française ».

Established in 1902, Hanoi school of medicine admitted Chinese students as early as 1905. This regional recruitment aimed at reinforcing French influence over Asia by training medical assistants for institutions located in China. Educational and diplomatic stakes intertwined through the actions of colonial and imperial authorities and diplomatic representatives in China. However, the enrollment of med students remained limited until the 1930s, suffering from foreign competition and from a limited “Frenchificated” scientific training.
