On ne s’étonnera donc pas que le bestiaire de Balzac, historien des mœurs soit conséquent. Une enquête sur la connaissance personnelle que l’écrivain a pu avoir dans ce domaine et sur les voies de son acquisition s’imposait ainsi qu’une mise en parallèle des pratiques du xixe siècle avec le témoignage de La Comédie humaine. De plus, il était intéressant de constater comment le romancier fait intervenir l’animal dans la diégèse, mettant en outre à profit une symbolique familière à ses lecteurs.

According to the sociologists, human behaviour towards domestic animals reveals the history and the thought processes of a civilization. There is, therefore, nothing surprising about the importance that Balzac, historian of modern morals, gives to his bestiary. It is crucial to explore what personal knowledge Balzac may have acquired in this field and the ways in which that knowledge may have been acquired. A parallel will also be drawn between the practices of the XIXth century and the testimony of La Comédie humaine. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how the novelist brings the animal into the textual diegesis and how he further exploits a symbolism familiar to his readers.
