Cet article analyse l’apparition de l’expression « exploitation de l’homme par l’homme » sous la monarchie de Juillet dans les milieux saint-simoniens et suit son évolution jusqu’en 1851. L’expression permet de comprendre la société issue de la Révolution française à partir de la division antagoniste du social en deux classes : la bourgeoisie et le prolétariat, qui remplacent le schème industrieux/oisifs utilisé par Saint-Simon auparavant. Les saint-simoniens républicains resituent l’exploitation au sein du monde industriel lui-même, affirmant qu’elle doit être surmontée non en niant les divisions de la société, mais en les intégrant dans une architecture institutionnelle spécifique. This article analyses the emergence of the expression “exploitation of man by man” under the July monarchy in Saint-Simonian circles and follows its evolution until 1851. The expression enables those circles to understand post-revolutionary society as a divided society between two antagonistic social classes: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This new vision of society replaces the industrious/idle scheme used by Saint-Simon. Republican Saint-Simonians resituate exploitation within the industrial world itself, claiming that this exploitation must be overcome not by denying the divisions of society, but by integrating them into a specific institutional architecture.
