Initially, the father must achieve differentiation from the mother; subsequently, he must distinguish himself from the symbol of the divine and from the self, an event none of the theories cover. Based on two later but fundamental Jungian writings – one on the Trinity, and the other on the symbol of transsubstantiation – as well as on a clinical experience, the author shows how the Jungian concept of the father will strive to disengage itself from that natural promiscuity which links all these archetypes. It is destined to become the differentiating function which creates meaning and opens the door to the Other.
