En Occident, du xviiie au début du xxe siècle, les grands débats ont porté sur la place des humains dans la Nature, puis sur leur origine et leur évolution biologique et culturelle. Il a fallu franchir les obstacles relatifs à l’acceptation d’ancêtres – créationnisme, théorie du déluge, racialisme –, avant que les connaissances et les savoir-faire des Préhistoriques ne soient reconnus grâce aux études des fossiles humains et des vestiges archéologiques. Aujourd’hui, les grandes inventions qui jalonnent tout notre lointain passé, avec les implications économiques et culturelles qui en découlent, révèlent le caractère buissonnant et non linéaire de l’évolution humaine, la coexistence dans le passé de plusieurs espèces humaines et une mosaïque temporelle et spatiale des cultures.

From the 18th to early 20th centuries, the great debates in the Western world concerned mankind’s place in nature, the origin of the human race, and then its biological and cultural evolution. Obstacles such as creationism, the theory of the flood, and racialism, related to the acceptation of ancestors, had to be overcome before the knowledge and skills of the Prehistoric peoples were acknowledged, thanks to studies of fossils and archeological finds. Today, the great inventions that marked our remote past, along with their economic and cultural implications, reveal that human evolution was an unruly, spreading, non-linear matter. Several humanoid species coexisted at the same time, forming a mosaic of cultures in time and space.
