À partir du récit de son expérience de psychologue clinicien en service de soins somatiques, l’auteur développe les enjeux psychiques à l’œuvre dans ce travail auprès de patients atteints de maladies graves. À côté de l’angoisse, c’est plus subtilement un vécu de honte autant que d’ennui qui déchire imperceptiblement son étoffe de professionnel. Vécus également éprouvés par les malades, prostrés dans l’univers étroit de la position hypocondriaque dans laquelle les confinent maladie et traitements. Selon l’auteur, s’aviser de l’importance et de la valeur de ces affects, représente pour le psychologue clinicien une dimension essentielle de son travail.

Drawing on his experience as a clinical psychologist in a somatic care unit, the author of this article explores the mental stakes at play in work carried out with patients suffering from serious illnesses. Over and above the sense of anxiety, it is a more subtle sense of shame and world-weariness which imperceptibly eats away at the professional’s core. Such feelings are also experienced by the patients themselves, lying prone in the straitjacket of the hypochondriac status to which they are confined by their illness and subsequent treatments. The author argues that recognising the importance and value of such affects is an essential part of the clinical psychologist’s work.
