Ricœur, White, and Returning to the Question of Reality

This paper begins by summarizing the last stages of the debate between Paul Ricœur and Hayden White on the subject of reality writing. It then depicts a history of the bonds between history and literary genres, and considers the writing of an “undisciplined” history interacting with emotions. Indeed, emotional language does not allow for demarcation between fiction and non-fiction literature. The paper also describes the present connection between literary theory and history via the New Historicism and the “corporeal narratology” project. The conclusion considers emerging textual worlds: the digital age predicts new types of reality and fictional writing, which will have to come to terms with the virtual.
