Au xviie siècle, la production d’ouvrages héraldiques au Portugal fut abondante mais agitée de polémiques. Celles-ci reposaient largement sur la question du monopole des hérauts de la Couronne en la matière. Le savoir héraldique formait alors un discours complexe de justification de l’ordre politique et social, rendant compte de l’image idéale de la société et permettant, en même temps, d’en corriger les défauts. La rivalité entre officiers royaux et particuliers rendait visible l’équilibre précaire entre la Couronne et les différentes forces sociales qui cherchaient à s’approprier cette matière, dans le contexte de l’union ibérique puis, après 1640, dans celui de la restauration de l’indépendance portugaise sous la maison de Bragance.

In the 17th century, the production of heraldic works in Portugal was abundant but controversial. These controversies rested mainly on the monopoly issues that the heralds in the service of the Crown wanted to reserve for themselves in these matters. Heraldic knowledge formed a complex discourse justifying the political and social order, reflecting the ideal image of society and at the same time pretending to correct its defects. The rivalry between royal officers and private individuals made visible the precarious balance between the Crown and the different social forces that sought to appropriate this matter, in the context of the Iberian Union and then, after 1640, with the restoration of the independence under the house of Braganza.
