Rediscovery of old colonial areas in Indonesian cities

In Indonesia, since the late 1990s and the early 2000s, colonial built heritage rehabilitation programmes have developed in Old Town areas, especially in Java. Shifting perspectives on colonial architectural legacy are raising questions. Based on two main examples, Old Jakarta (Batavia) and Old Semarang, this article seeks to explain this sudden interest for restoration and preservation of colonial heritage. On the way, it questions the concept of heritage.
