As part of a contemporary movement to produce knowledge on the plurality of research contexts and practices, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, this article proposes to examine a singular context of learning the practice of research in geography. Through the development of the experience of a doctoral student who is carrying out his thesis within the framework of an Industrial Convention for Training through Research (Cifre) scheme and a multidisciplinary and multi-partner research project, the authors apprehend the specificities, particular or not, of research practices and adaptations in this working context. Subsequently the doctoral student questions the extent to which his PhD research topic has been inspired and stimulated by this multidisciplinary study carried out on the savannahs of the western lowlands of Réunion. A reflexive approach has been required to investigate the posture of the Cifre researcher, as well as the methods and tools mobilized to deal with an applied and involved research situation.
