The Spanish Translations of the Legislative Norms and Economic Writings of Turgot (1774-1791)

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2016. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article aims to reconstruct the distribution of Spanish translations of the economic writings of Turgot. The in-depth analysis of this subject has led to the identification of at least eight translations and summaries of his writings, published between 1774 and 1791. The most important text for this distribution of Turgot’s ideas in the Hispanic world was the Spanish translation of his Réflexions sur la formation et la distribution des richesses (1769-1770), published in 1791. However, the case of Turgot illustrates the importance of certain sources rarely taken into account in the matter of intellectual exchanges on the international level, the legislative norms. This genre of writings played an essential role in bringing Turgot’s ideas into Spain, in particular the edicts that established the legal foundations of two reforms that Turgot himself regarded as vital for the regeneration of the French Monarchy: the freedom of the grain trade and the abolition of the jurandes. With Spain, there is no doubt that the latter measure constituted the principle legacy of his thinking.
