The funds deposited at the Centre d’Histoire du Travail (CHT) in Nantes offer the possibility to grasp the complexity of the representations of the Great War, shaped by Augustin Hamon. As an eminent figure of a war-torn European socialism, Augustin Hamon embodies the socialist paradoxes of wartime. From the local to the international level, the extensive correspondence with major socialist leaders as well as with a network of activists dispersed at the front is an opportunity to understand the mental universe of socialists, the political exchanges in wartime. An exceptional material by its scope and the method of investigation pursued by Augustin Hamon, both activist and researcher, these letters, which largely escape censorship, nourish his vision of the war experience, presented in a work of a certain modernity.
