La médiation familiale a émergé en France sous la poussée des associations de Parents divorcés. Les professionnels de l’accompagnement familial s’en emparent à fin des années 1980. Il aura fallu moins de vingt années pour qu’une action informelle, posée de manière empirique, soit institutionnalisée. Nous poserons, dans cet article, le contexte social, économique et politique de son développement. Puis nous rappellerons les étapes de la professionnalisation pour enfin nous interroger quant à sa place, aujourd’hui, dans la régulation sociale et de son incidence sur les normes sociales.

From Militant Action to Institution : The Emergence of Family Mediation Family mediation was brought to France on the impetus of organizations of divorced parents. Family support professionals took it over at the end of the 1980’s. In less than 20 years an informal activity, set up on an empirical basis, has become an institution. In this article, we present the social, economic and political context in which it developed. Next we cover the stages by which it has been professionalized, and finally we reflect on its current role in social control, and its effect on social norms.
