Jean Daniélou’s Theology of Judaeo-Christianity, published in 1958, was a great success, although it was received differently from the author’s initial intention. Conceived as a response to Harnack and as a theology of Christianity of Jewish origin, it was seen as an invitation to return to the Jewish roots of Christianity. Fifty years later, the perspective on Judaeo-Christianity has evolved considerably. Modern scholarship has challenged Daniélou’s teleological vision, focusing instead on the role of social change in shaping religious identities. Although Daniélou’s theories are now largely abandoned, it would be useful to revive the Cardinal’s original intuition: can we reconstruct the theology of the first Christians of Jewish origin?

Le livre Théologie du Judéo-christianisme de Jean Daniélou, publié en 1958, a remporté un grand succès, bien qu’il fût reçu différemment de l’intention originale de l’auteur. Conçu comme une réponse à Harnack et une théologie du christianisme d’origine juive, il a été perçu comme une invitation à retrouver les racines juives du christianisme. Cinquante ans après, la perspective sur le judéo-christianisme a significativement changé. Les recherches modernes ont remis en question la vision téléologique de Daniélou, se concentrant plutôt sur le rôle des changements sociaux dans la formation des identités religieuses. Bien que les théories de Daniélou soient maintenant fort délaissées, il serait cependant utile de renouer avec l’intuition première du Cardinal : peut-on reconstruire la théologie des premiers chrétiens d’origine juive ?
