Afin de restituer l’histoire sociale des avocats africains en France, cet article examine les conditions légales de leur intégration dans les professions juridiques depuis la période coloniale jusqu’aux indépendances. Il analyse ensuite les déterminants sociologiques de l’exercice contemporain de leur profession. En se concentrant plus particulièrement sur l’examen des relations qu’ils entretiennent avec le monde social de l’immigration en termes de réseaux professionnels, de stratégies rhétoriques et d’engagement civique, cet essai tente de comprendre dans quelle mesure les avocats africains peuvent participer à la reproduction du consensus politique sur l’immigration.

The Incorporation of African Lawyers into the French BarIn order to take into account the social history of African lawyers in France, this paper examines the legal modes of their incorporation into the legal profession from the colonial period to decolonization. It then investigates the sociological determinants of their contemporary professional practice. By focusing more specifically on the analysis of the relationship they have with immigrant communities – professional networks, rhetorical strategies and civic engagement – this essay tries to understand how African lawyers can contribute to the reproduction of a political consensus on immigration.
