Cet article montre que les nombreuses ambivalences présentes dans La Vocation de saint Matthieu, loin de compromettre son unité, sont au service de la figuration exacte des textes évangéliques et d’un dispositif dévotionnel original : l’image, par le jeu des références et la mise au travail du regardant, ne cesse de varier et de s’enrichir. Reconnaître en l’indécision (P. Burgard, L. Pericolo, G. Careri) une véritable force plastique permet de résoudre la question de l’identité de Matthieu et de faire surgir d’autres thèmes visuellement opératoires, le Paiement du tribut et la Résurrection du Christ, qui, articulés à celui de La Vocation, dramatisent l’expérience de la conversion.

This article shows that the numerous ambivalences to be found in Caravaggio’s Calling of Saint Matthew, far from ruining its unity, contribute to the exact figuration of Gospel texts and result in an original devotional device: the image, thanks to the interplay of references and the active role of the viewer, is constantly varying and enriching. Acknowledging indecision (P. Burgard, L. Pericolo, G. Careri) as a true plastic force makes it possible to solve the question of Matthew’s identity and reveal other visually operative themes within the picture, the Tribute Money (Mt 17:24-27) and the Resurrection of Christ, which, connected with Matthew’s calling, dramatize the experience of conversion.
