Mobility of Firms and Territories: Paradoxes of the Tangier Fashion Industry

From the case of Tangier and of the fashion industry, the objective of this article is to question the concept of enterprise mobility in relation to their uneven integration into the global production system. It is through constantly changing and differentiated logics of key players that will be addressed the interdependence between nomadism of major European clients and the low mobility of local actors. The position of Tangier, once more strategic due to convergent economic and political interests, make it a hub between decisions and capital coming from Europe on the one hand and workforce largely coming from the more disadvantaged areas of Morocco and employed in this work intensive industry on the other. Squeezed between these two forms of mobility, both opposing and inseparable, the relative immobility of local entrepreneurship equally reflects the dependency relationships between the two shores of the Mediterranean as well as the ambiguity of the Kingdom of Morocco policies to capture FDI at the expense of true emancipation of local entrepreneurs and industry.
