Conducting surveys among trans people in geography. Participatory methods to take account of over-research?

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Trans communities are over-researched in France and in the United Kingdom. On one hand, their participation in academic and non-academic studies is over-requested. On the other, significant gaps can be brought out in trans knowledge. Activists and researchers recommend some principles of ethics in order to meet the challenges of over-studying. In this article, the Author takes stock of the participatory methods used in his PhD thesis designed specially to answer this issue. The cumbersome nature of the methods limits its benefits for the communities studied and the research. In particular, the participants experiencing a lot of violence in their everyday lives experienced the process as an additional violence, as it led to dissect coping mechanisms. Moreover, it tends to overwhelm the communities. Researchers who are also members of the studied communities are finally stuck in a double bind between academia’s and communities’expectations.
