The 1807 Hausa Revolt: Resistance and Control of African Slaves in Brazil

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2006. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The 1807 Hausa conspiracy Resistance and control of the African slaves in Brazil This article evolves around a conspiracy of African slaves in 1807 in Bahia, in regard to which are discussed, on the one hand, the African origin, the Brazilian context, the meanings, religious mentality, political symbols, organization, goals and strategies of the rebels, and on the other hand, the colonial government policies of control and repression. The search for suspects in the capital and the contiguous sugar plantation region revealed a complex world of social, economic and ritual relations involving slaves, freedmen and masters. It concludes that side by side with the more open resistance of the revolt, there flourished a miniscule, molecular resistance characterized by the struggle for spaces of autonomy, the formation of solidarity networks and the construction of identities, where, however, both vertical and horizontal conflicts also abounded.
