Why is Habermas considered, in France, as a full member of the Frankfurt School, even as its contemporary incarnation ? By revealing the story behind this French image, this article aims to detach Habermas from the “first generation” of the Frankfurt School, in order to rediscover the theoretical impulses of the latter. Thus, freed from habermasian guardianship, the original Critical Theory regains the status of an original thought, whose critical intuitions, as much as its aporias, offer fertile sources for its current appropriation.
