Max Weber, Routine Charisma, and the Air Force: Charismatic Education in Officers

Charisma appears repeatedly in speeches and on the armed forces. Obedience to see some individuals while justified by the exceptional qualities of an individual ‘gifted’, ‘with a personal magnetism.’ Breaking with this design ‘naturalized’ and ‘essentialized’ charisma, the following article has a twofold objective. On one hand, relying on the case of the Air Force, particularly on the structure of officers training, the following developments describe the emergence of a charismatic founder and its gradual routinization through different modalities. On the other hand, the authors propose to offer an operationalization of one of the least studied concepts of the sociology of domination Weberian charismatic that of education. Participating in the emergence of a charismatic function, it would also mean the transmission of provisions to collect the charisma.
