For a long time, Amazonian indigenous peoples were the targets of Christian evangelization campaigns rather than their initiators. During the past twenty years or so, however, some indigenous people have started taking part in missionary activities. This article explores this phenomenon among the Evangelical Shipibo-Conibo of the Peruvian Amazonia. After mapping the conditions that gave rise to the formation of Shipibo-Conibo churches, it examines the training methods of indigenous missionaries and what is at stake in their proselytizing commitment. Based on ethnographic data, the study shows that indigenous Evangelical leaders’ appropriation of missionary practices results from the articulation of foreign missions’ pedagogical initiatives and specifically Shipibo-Conibo cultural, economic, and political dynamics.
