The Perfect Body: Sport and Appearance in Girls’ Magazines

The goal of this article is to describe and compare the uses of the body that are prescribed for girls in two magazines for young teens. It studies the behavioral model proposed in sports and appearance. While these two magazines encourage certain bodily practices that conform to gender stereotypes, their prescriptions are not strictly identical. They vary according to the social characteristics of the readers they address and reflect the bodily practices of different social classes.
