While many studies have focused on the under-representation of female students in STEM education in France, very few have analyzed the social gender relations between students, or addressed the possible gender violence that the female minority may experience in these institutions. Based on the results of a survey conducted among engineering students in 2016 on the study conditions of female students, this article aims to draw up a picture of gender-based and sexual, verbal and physical violence, and to analyze the mechanisms that lead to the oversexualization of campus life and the normalization of this violence on many campuses. In particular, the article explores the female students’ strategies of denial, avoidance and minimization in dealing with sexist jokes.
