The report centers around the premise that the task of the French Court of Cassation is to defend the rule of law, and to exert a normative authority in a world where the rule of law is becoming not only increasingly complex—on both a national and international level—but also increasingly socially sensitive. Its judges, advocates general, and judicial assistants will therefore need to possess rare skills, and the Court will have to recruit them in an increasingly competitive climate. This article offers an analysis of best practices, as well as the strategic choices made by other supreme courts in the context of these challenges.
