Whereas Émile Vandervelde is a central character of Belgian and international socialism during the 20th century, his first wife between 1901 and 1921, Charlotte Helen Speyer, known as “Lalla”, remains an obscure figure of Brussels feminist networks. This article intends to analyze the individual trajectory of these two protagonists in the light of their union, from which emerged numerous reciprocal influences. The study of this marriage also investigates many themes of European socialism of the turn of the century, such as its relationship to the bourgeoisie, to the feminist struggle and to the emergence of popular education.
