Precarity of the Subject, Object of Demand: Prejudice and Precarity Tested by Psychoanalysis

What we see emerging on the social scene in the modern world are the intertwined figures of precarity and prejudice. Here we seek to determine the contribution of psychoanalysis as to the specific nature of this position in its unconscious dimension. This consists in getting a hold on the dimension of engaged unconscious demand, beyond the stereotype of the social discourse on precarity and exclusion. This dimension finds expression in the “exceptionality syndrome” identified by Freud, that is, those patients who use traumatic experiences in the past as an excuse to avoid any sacrifice (no matter how partial) that could help them progress in the cure, claiming that they are an “exception” in the name of a right to symbolic compensation. Maintained by real suffering, in this position the jouissance encysts, blocking the subject’s progress toward their divided truth. This engages the subjectified form of “cultural malaise,” or the “hostility to culture” and challenging ideals, together with the position of analysis in the condition of the symptom and social demands.
