The authors aim to identify the insights offered by the film Él by Luis Buñuel about the economy of the jouissance in paranoia. In a church, Francisco (the main character) exchanges glances with a woman (Gloria). This encounter will change his relation to jouissance, which until then had been stable thanks to the imaginary regulation function of the religious perversion (père-version, or “father-version”). The authors examine the consequences: a shift toward the delusion of jealousy, and a defensive resort to perversion by choosing a fetish enabling him to approach the woman. The film shows with subtlety the increasing importance of sight during the passional delirium that this subject experiences. The film shows in a convincing way that the sight-object is linked to the voice-object. The sudden sight and voice hallucinations contribute to the reification of the subject as an object of mockery. They target the jouissance nature of the subject, who defends himself from this unbearable situation by acting out his desires.
