The process of “becoming a mother” is a long inner task that draws on the experiences of childhood, especially those linked to the mother. When death undermines this maternal model during childhood, what impact does it have on the subjective experience of pregnancy and maternity? We met with a young woman during her second pregnancy and were able to note the impact of such a bereavement on her capacity to invest in maternity and the child by using a semi-directive interview and a Rorschach test. We propose to reflect on the issues at stake in caring for the child in mourning, because the child’s experience of the mother’s death can have an impact on the construction of his/her identity, including its parental aspects.
