The system of ideals of liberalism does not allow adolescents to structure themselves psychically. They find themselves fixed in a pre-adolescent logic of revolt against an imaginary father and of an unrealistic quest for an ideal with which to identify. That is why they sympathize with the “solution of Jihad”.The cause is to be found in the lack of transmission between this historical generation marked by precarity, and the earlier historical generation marked by triumphant liberalism. The latter is characterized by the following “non-ideals”: freedom considered as an exercise of omnipotence in a laisser-faire context, and thus a refusal either to submit to or to exert symbolic authority. Hence the failure of parental transmission.
