A Freudian hypothesis based on a phylogenic fantasy assumed that in the process of human evolution and the transition from a quadruped to an upright walker, came along an organic repression (organische Verdrängung) of olfactory libidinous satisfactions in order to make room for visual primacy. Based on the current state of our modernity which pulls us further away from our ability to make the goods we consume with our own hands, this article questions the impact of the hand’s repression and the investment of which it was the object. We propose an analogy between Freudian organic repression from the standpoint of the verticality of the human body and a repression of the hand’s function, resulting from the grip of technology and digitization in our relationship to the world, the significance of which we have yet to completely grasp.
