In the shadow of Abelard shines Héloïse. The dialectic of love and the feminine in the correspondence of P. Abélard and Héloïse

In 2003, in Nantes, during an international conference devoted to the life and work of P. Abélard, many authors noted a change in the interpretation of the letters of the two “immortal lovers.” While they are certainly love letters, they also have an ethical dimension. This is the purpose of Héloïse’s last letter: to request recognition of the “infirmity” of the feminine and the establishment of rules of life specific to this condition. In writing, Héloïse testifies to an unmentionable fact –that she is lacking– an inconsistency through which she makes herself the martyr. In this dialogue in abstentia, Héloïse, a figure of loving passion, becomes a “true widow.”
