Being born in relation to others, embracing the fall

In the case of very early depressive episodes, it is often very difficult to qualify the experiences of falling that the patient faces even before the constitution of representations of their body and space. Therapists have to pay close attention to their own bodily experiences in their countertransference and suggest representations that are as close as possible to archaic sensory experiences. In this work, detours through the art of dance and through infant observation and autism clinics can prove fruitful. Based on the clinical study of dance workshops offered to young autistic children and their parents, this paper discusses the possibility of elaborating the fall of primary depression through an encounter with the shared pleasure of diving forward. It thus highlights a discreet stage in the development of 4- to 5-month-old babies that integrates the upper and lower articulation of their body by experiencing the playful plunge into the bond to the other.
