With the sudden emergence of Covid-19, anxieties linked to environmental threats have given way to fear and terror, reawakening the specter of the great epidemics ingrained deep in the phylogenetic memory of humankind. The author explores their traces in literature through the testimonies of Axel Munthe, Alessandro Manzoni, and Thomas Mann, where past and present sometimes overlap. At the same time, she examines the ambiguous love–hate relationship with nature.
