A psychoanalytic reading of the theses of the acceleration of time in the capitalist era

In his work, Hartmut Rosa suggests reflecting on the “feeling of the acceleration of time” which he considers characteristic of our modernity. He associates the emergence and recurrence of this sentiment with the social, political, economic and technological transformations of our time influenced by the expansion of capitalism as an economic system, as an ideology and as a materiality. The approach angle is initially phenomenological, but is built like a critical analysis of our modernity. Our purpose here does not aim to directly discuss the stated theses, but rather to ask ourselves what psychoanalysis could grasp from this questioning. Can we consider capitalism, as materiality and as discourse, capable of influencing our relation to time? What questions does the “feeling of acceleration of time” ask to psychoanalysis? Can psychoanalysis contribute, and if so how, to current reflections on time – considered here first as an experience, an affect? And finally, is there any lesson to be drawn from these reflections to guide the clinic?
