In favour of side-stepping deinstitutionalization: transitional subversion

In a context arising from socio-cultural mutations induced by hypermodernity within institutions dealing with patients suffering from a failure of socialization (mésinscription), and based on my experience of assisting group settings for analyzing professional practice, I identify here the movements of deadly violence that force their elaboration as primary material of clinical work. The group breakdown that is intrinsically linked to this process allows for the (re)opening of a historicizing temporality capable of restoring otherness. These movements are considered from the angle of the process of despair, of which the anarchistic drive is the principal motor. Rediscovering the contract of humanity and these reorganizations is brought about by the renunciation of murderous forms of jouissance. While transgressive in appearance, these reorganizations lead professionals to “tinker”, and even to resort to subversive forms of acting out which may be apprehended through the concept of transitional subversion.
