Illich’s sound ecology. A critical method for digital materialism?

Based on an analysis of the place of listening skills in Illich’s technocriticism, the author observes how online listening technologies contribute to shaping a digital sensory regime. As sound and music become more and more prevalent in our interactions with “machines imitating human behavior,” Illich’s method allows us to highlight a sensory ecology that reveals how our attention is captured online. By looking at music streaming and artifacts like the player, recommendation algorithms, or an affect recognition software, it is possible to contemplate the theological tensions of digital materialism.
