The tweet: A constrained format challenged by the creativity of users

Discursive possibilities on online social networks are organized in a conventional way. Common functions can be stylized because their meaning is recognizable from acquired usage, and the organization of forms and symbols is stabilized. This is the case with Twitter: the tweet format is constrained, and discursive practices are oriented toward standardized productions. However, existing formats leave some room for users to be creative and “break out of the box.” Using extracts from a corpus of political tweets, we propose to analyze the use of the various elements that make up the tweet format, and the way in which technological possibilities are exploited by internet users to go beyond the standard format.
