Visual prescriptions for urban living: The role of visual documents in the communication of renovation projects

Many neighborhoods in today's cities are undergoing transformations aiming to profoundly change their path of development and thus the place they occupy in the life of the city and its inhabitants. Thus, the motif of the “smart city” is leading politicians, architects, journalists, and urban planners to project various visual representations onto the districts being “renovated.” These representations are based on the existing buildings and include “insertions” intended to show how the future constructions will be situated in the chosen place. The analysis of the images employed by each category of actor and of the texts that accompany them shows that the areas concerned are caught in a tension between different prescriptions of uses and ways of inhabiting these places, which notably involve determination of what the inhabitants and legitimate occupants of the places are or would be.
