Imitatio, aemulatio, comparatio Alexandri: Uses and Misuses

In the second half of the 20th century, three “categories” were introduced by scholars to serve the study of the reception of Alexander the Great in Rome: imitatio, aemulatio and comparatio Alexandri. We propose to examine, through three practical cases, the problems generated by the use of these categories, and in particular an overly strict interpretation of them.
