Women in the circle of Herodes Atticus
Type de matériel :

Philostratus, followed by modern historians, shows the world of Athenian sophists and notables around Herodes Atticus as a man’s world; women served only to highlight the great man and his moral qualities. Inscriptions present an other aspect of the place of women in the life of the sophist, and also in Athenian society of the imperial time: this study aims to show how the women of Herodes’ family circle contributed to his fortune and strengthened his international networks; it presents also women as true actors of Athenian public life, just like men.
